It is essential to distinguish between biodegradable, oxo-degradable, and compostable descriptions. Only compostability is reliable; the other two terms have no clear definition or third-party certification.
The recognised European Standard EN 13432 remains in place, with third-party certification, such as from DINCERTCO, providing essential confirmation of compostability. Materials can be certified as industrially compostable or home compostable; the latter also guarantees compliance with industrial compostability standards.
It must be noted that both home and industrial composting require formal installations to achieve the end result. Given this, a compostable solution is far from simple.
The Problem with Bio/Oxo-degradable Films, is that both of these descriptions suggest some degradable solution, but these are not substantiated. Biodegradability as a term has no proper definition, and therefore, the description is actually meaningless. The same applies to oxo-degradable material.
Only compostable film offers a specific definition with third-party certification. Kempner can supply a range of shrink films which are fully compostable and certificated.
