Keep Your Heart Beating – A Warehouse Efficiency Guide

By September 24, 2015No Comments

The warehouse; it’s the beating heart of many a business. The way your stock comes and goes, and how it’s managed and stored in between, can make a tremendous difference to the success of your company as a whole. Just a healthy heart is important for a person to thrive and grow, so an efficient warehouse is vital to the health of your business.

Red Heart

Organised Flow

When your heart beats, deoxygenated blood flows into the heart through the veins, and oxygenated blood flows out through the arteries. Although simple, this system is highly organised. You know what is coming in, and where it arrives, and you know what’s leaving and where it exits.

Direction Arrows

This kind of knowledge is also very helpful when organising a warehouse. If you separate goods coming in and goods going out, maintaining a specific route for each, you don’t need to worry about them getting confused.

Efficient Loading

With each beat, the heart collects blood in one half, sends it past the lungs to load it with oxygen, collects oxygen-rich blood in the other half and sends it back out around the body. And it usually does this somewhere between 60 and 100 times a minute.

The rate of exchange in your warehouse may not be quite at this speed, but you can certainly reflect the same kind of efficiency. It’s important that your stock doesn’t sit around in unorganised piles, but is quickly organised into an efficient storage system. At Kempner, we provide shrink wrapping solutions which helps you to organise your stock in secure pallets, and shelving specialists like Pallet Racking Direct can build bespoke racking systems on which to store it, helping you to load and store your stock efficiently.

Clear Arteries

Blocked arteries pose a significant risk to the heart and the health of the person; blocked aisles in your warehouse can also be a health risk.

Make sure that your aisles don’t get clogged up by rubbish, by ensuring that there are convenient recycling bins for discarded plastic wrap, cardboard and other packing materials. You also need to consider the danger of accidents involving pedestrian staff and forklift drivers – make sure that they have separate aisles, clearly marked.

By thinking of your warehouse as a heart, you not only acknowledge its importance to the business, but also give it the priorities it needs. Pay attention to the health of your warehouse, and you’ll have a healthy foundation for your business.
