This article will guide new or existing users of industrial shrink film in respect of the definitions of industrial shrink film so that they may have a ready classification for industrial shrink films.

Transit Shrink Films

Polythene (PE) Industrial Shrink Films

The most widespread industrial shrink film is low density polyethylene, more commonly referred to as polythene or PE.

The principal use to which PE is put is as a transit medium. It allows packs to be wrapped individually or collated and offers the best combination of protection and unit cost when compared with the alternatives.

PE industrial shrink film is used on a vast range of products, from radiators and work surfaces to collation of cans and jars and the individual shrink packaging of cartons and products themselves, such as pizza.

Industrial shrink film applications do have overlap between transit and display industrial shrink film where there is a requirement for the enhanced presentation offered by display, and equally, where the advantages of display are not required.

The industrial shrink wrap ranges do not overlap totally as a fundamental transit requirement in the normal way can be satisfied only by PE industrial shrink film.

Display Shrink Films

Polyolefin (PO) & Polyvinylchloride (PVC) Industrial Shrink Films

Display industrial shrink films are categorised into Polyolefin PO and polyvinylchloride PVC industrial shrink films.

Polyolefin Industrial Shrink Films

Polyolefin industrial shrink films have multiple layers of PE and polypropylene PP and may be irradiated for extra strength, and treated for hot slip or anti-fog properties. Polyolefin industrial shrink films are formulated to offer a wide sealing and shrinking window so that they can be readily used on manual, semi and fully automatic machinery.

Polyolefin industrial shrink films are so versatile so that they are the first choice when using display industrial shrink films; PO industrial shrink films will generally offer an excellent solution to an industrial shrink film requirement.

In addition to these industrial Polyolefin shrink films , Kempner also offer other technically advanced Polyolefin shrink films .

PVC Industrial Shrink Films

PVC industrial shrink films have been largely superceded by Polyolefin (PO) industrial shrink films. PVC industrial shrink films have particularly easy sealing and shrinking features but they are inferior to PO industrial shrink films in the areas of strength, low temperature flexibility and equipment maintenance requirement. PVC industrial shrink films continue to be used on very flexible packs, particularly heat sensitive products and, generally, on older equipment.

PVC shrink film is also used with less plasticiser in the form of semi-rigid industrial shrink film where its shrink properties give its application, substituting BOPP overwrap film, the advantage of a shrink finish.
